The clip-clop of horse hooves and four well-worn wooden wheels hitting the cracked pavement. The shrill, metallic whistle of the night guard announcing his departure. The coos of the resident doves. A car clunkity-clunks by, both it and the road sound as though in rough shape. The fruit lady is in full swing, shouting out her list of goods as if it would be the first time my neighbors and I were made aware of her existence. Not far behind, a hushed conversation ambles by. Barely audible it could be in Spanish, English, Egyptian. A rooster. Need I say more. Various other birds, with functioning wings, join the dialog, gossiping from one side of the street to the other.

It’s dawn. I’m not quite ready to participate. So I roll away from the early morning sun ray that has landed quietly, almost apologetically, on my bed and drift back to sleep.

Many have peered into the deep, smoky throat of Volcán Masaya. Many have tip-toed around its craters’ edges. But few have climbed this opposing windswept ridge for a look back at its enormity. The Masaya Volcano National Park comprises an area of 54 km² and includes two volcanoes and five craters. From this not-so-distant vantage point not only can you take in its acreage all at once, but you can see what its natural duty has done to its surroundings. You won’t make it to this vista without the local motley crew in tow. After your scramble to the top, these kids will tell you everything you need to know about the volcano and its domain.

This past December, Nicaragua held its first-ever cigar festival, Festival del Tabaco 2009, also called Sabor y Aroma de Nicaragua. Nicaragua’s tobacco growing regions have successfully yielded top-quality leaf, giving birth in recent years to a mini-industry of all-Nicaraguan tobacco cigars – true puros in the tradition of Cuba.

Las Fiestas Patronales in Nicaragua are never dull and Las Fiestas Patronales in Diriamba, in honor of San Sebastián, are no exception. According to the city’s own website, the feast of San Sabastián stands above all the celebrations as Nicaragua’s most authentic connection to its people’s indigenous and Spanish roots. The celebrations last several days, from the 17th to the 27th of January. Many of the dances, songs, and costumes are true to the traditions that predate the arrival of the Spanish by hundreds of years. Traditional dances include Toro Huaco, El Güegüense or Macho Raton, Las Inditas, El Gigante, and El Viejo y La Vieja. Both young and old take part in the baile. And sometimes the woman is really a man.
